Five Pillars: The Foundation Of The Quintuple Aim

It is crucial that healthcare companies, from payers to innovators, make these five pillars the foundation of the quintuple aim.

“At the end of 2021, the CMS Innovation Center released a strategy refresh to transform the delivery system, focus on equity, pay for healthcare based on value to the patient instead of volume of services provided, and deliver person-centered care that meets people where they are. The strategy includes five pillars to advance value-based care: drive accountable care, advance health equity, support care innovation, address affordability and partner to achieve system transformation.”

Why CMS is prioritizing value-based care and how healthcare companies can support this initiative

The KPI development process I have developed will evolve to include these pillars.

When assessing the success of healthcare, it is the multiprong approaches that consider different points of view that will be the most successful.

Before brainstorming and developing Key Performance Indicators, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How does this (my) product/solution drive accountable care?
  2. How is this (my) company advancing health equity?
  3. Does this (my) product/solution support care innovation, and how?
  4. Is this initiative improving access by addressing affordability?
  5. What partnerships can be used to achieve system transformation?

If you cannot answer these five questions favorably or in-depth. Return to the drawing board and make the appropriate adjustments. Without understanding these five questions, your KPIs will be incomplete and ineffective.

In a sense, these five questions help to develop the Value Proposition further. In time, these questions will become foundational in the adoption of healthcare innovation.

To transform healthcare takes transformative thoughts and approaches. By adopting these questions early, you, too, can transform the future of healthcare for the good of all.
